Textless Design @ Slack

Slack is testing its new design. They are geniuses! There is almost no content to read. According to Microsoft, the average attention span is 8 seconds. Why then bother people with benefits, features, and pricing on a single page? No one is going to read all that placeholder text. Do it like Apple, use big headlines, nice images, and animated graphics.

Slack’s new homepage has 125 words. Their old homepage has 283 words. You need 37 seconds to read 125 words and 1 minute, 24 seconds to read 283 words.

In conclusion, a good design minimizes the time to read and optimizes for scanning. “People rarely read web pages; instead, they scan the pages.” ~ Nielsen Norman Group
